Sperm fragmentation is the alteration and deletion of bases in the sperm DNA structure, or the cleavage of one or both strands of the DNA present in the sperm, causing the sperm DNA to break into small fragments. With current semen analysis tests, we can only assess sperm morphology, concentration, and motility, while evaluating sperm at the molecular level is not possible. However, detecting sperm DNA fragmentation can give us an insight into the integrity of the sperm genetic material, enhancing the chance of success in implementing assisted reproductive methods.
